January Whole30 – Day Twenty One

January 23, 2017

I’m not sure what happened, but my post from yesterday never posted! It was a good day 🙂

I haven’t experienced this much rain in a long time. Or ever. And apparently no one in LA has either because everyone was hunkered down as if the end of the world is coming. I was the only one out, even at the farmer’s market. I pulled up to two lonely farmers and a bunch of drenched kale. It was disappointing, to say the least.

After my ventures out in the rain, I was desperate to sit and do nothing. So I did. I came across this quote on social media recently and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head.

So that was my focus today. I practiced yoga. I read. I cooked. I listened to podcasts. I watched a documentary. I opened up my first ever batch of sauerkraut and somehow avoided eating the entire thing. All of these things have greatly reduced the stress in my life over the last few weeks. That and curling up with my heated blanket every night.

With the current state of the world, I think it’s extra important that we take care of ourselves. Rest, soak your feet, watch some cat videos on youtube, whatever you need. I’ve spent too much time tearing myself apart for not doing enough, not being more efficient, not being perfect. The first step in making this change is recognizing negative self-talk, obviously. Then it’s important to take active steps in shifting your mindset. Beating yourself up over “doing nothing” isn’t healthy.  Because some days you need to make a cup of tea and get right back into bed. And that’s ok. So instead of looking back on my day and thinking ‘wow, I did nothing today’, it’s more like ‘hell yeah! I did nothing today!’.

How do you guys practice self care? I’m a big fan of cocooning in my bed.

I did enjoy some delicious food today, despite my laziness. Because it was pouring most of the day, I just wanted warm food. Anything under that category would work.

Meal 1: two eggs scrambled with leftover roasted veggies (carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, yellow squash, mushroom) and sautéed greens

Meal 2: warm kale salad with turkey breast, more roasted veggies (broccoli, carrots, beets, mushrooms, red onion), and homemade balsamic dressing

Snack: leftover spaghetti squash warmed up with garlic and red chili flakes

Meal 3: bowl of my favorite chicken turmeric curry soup
